Today’s Story: Making A Livelihood From A Passion
In Perspective: An American Story To Believe In :
For Ben Rasmussen, a family man living in Woodbridge, Virginia, chocolate is a passion. Unlike most people, Ben Rasmussen used his passion to start a small business. A chocolate-making business. After winning awards for his chocolate bars, demand for his products is high. Still he maintains a one-person business. He controls everything about his company. Especially the quality of the chocolates he sells.Continue Reading
Today’s Story: Lessons From Myanmar
You have probably heard of Aung San Suu Kyi. She is the activist in Myanmar who spent 15 years under house arrest under her country’s previous regime. She now leads her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), which is currently in power in Myanmar. . . After so many years of struggle and house arrest, Aung San Suu Kyi finally came to a position – a leadership position – where she is able to do a lot of good for her people. The question to ponder is, “Why hasn’t she? . . . . .To answer that question, we look at recent events in Myanmar. We also look into our own ideals of freedom and equality and how they are threatened even in the western world.Continue Reading
Story Of Today: Who Wants To Be Like Donald?
In Perspective: Why Do Leaders Copy An Unpopular President? :
Have you noticed how, ever since the U.S. presidential elections, leaders in other countries have tried to act like Donald Trump? Some have tried to sound like him. Some have tried to beef up their stance against immigration. Some have taken to using Twitter more.
In the story of today, we take a look at the president of the Philippines, a French politician, the prime minister of Israel, and the president of Argentina. These leaders have not only expressed support for Donald Trump, they have also tried to behave like the U.S. president. It’s hard to say if emulating Donald Trump has helped these leaders in any way. In reality, behaving like Trump seems to turn more people against a leader – not gain support.Continue Reading
Top Story of the Day: Why The Commander In Chief Failed
In Perspective: Lessons In Leadership And Planning :
Every day, I look for stories of assurance that we live in a good world. When I don’t find particularly “good news,” I usually find something we can learn from. Something that tells us how the world works, and how we might use that information.
I found a story in the Washington Post that is pretty disturbing. It is about the planning and decision-making that went into a military operation. An operation that didn’t happen
The Washington Post article details how it took months for the Obama administration to plan an operation to take over a major city, Raqqa, in the fight against ISIS. Raqqa was and is a prime target because it is the capital city of the Caliphate of ISIS.
Donald Trump and his advisors took a brief look at all the work that was done – and they tossed it aside
. We see this as a new level of disdain for all Americans.Continue Reading
Top Story of the Day: Women Farmers In Mali Inch Closer To Equality
In Perspective: When The Slightest Shift In Policy Is A Giant Step In The Right Direction :
This is pretty good news: Law makers in Mali are looking into a way to help women farmers.
According to law in Mali, women cannot own land. A woman can work land that her husband owns. But if their husband decides to sell the land, what is she supposed to do?
The Malian government is looking into a solution: They will set aside 10% of government owned land exclusively for women to work.
It might not seem like such great news to you or me. From the point of view of a woman farmer in Mali, it just may be a major victory. From a more global perspective, this could be a small break for women worldwide.
A tiny movement that gives women even a little more opportunity in Mali just may be the beginning of something bigger. Imagine if a whole lot of countries changed their policies. Imagine if men and women in a whole lot of countries began to appreciate the value and integrity and dignity of women the same as they regard men. Just imagine. That would be really good news for the world, wouldn’t it?Continue Reading
Top Story of the Day: Standing Rock Protests Started By Teenagers
Perspective: Youth At The Forefront Of Progress :
Here’s some good news: Remember that gigantic protest at Standing Rock, to halt construction of the Dakota Access pipeline? Did you know it was all organized by teenagers?
We older generations ought to learn from the younger generation. These kids overcame drastic hardships in their personal and social lives. In so doing they formed a club of sorts that eventually became the Standing Rock protest.
As we might have suspected, Donald Trump has apparently ordered that the pipelines be revived.
I suspect that Mr. Trump will be severely challenged by people who are less than half his age.
