Have you heard of the Mercedes-Benz?
The brand, which is known for its quality and precision engineering, bears the name of its creator, Karl Benz. This is his story.

On January 29, 1886, Karl Benz patented the first successful gasoline-driven automobile, marking the beginning of a complete transformation of society, our lifestyles, and how we get around. And it started with a tricycle.

The Benz Motor-Wagen

Born in 1844 in Germany, Karl grew up fascinated by mechanics. He studied engineering and started a company making industrial machines. But his true dream was something much bigger.

Karl Benz had a vision. He wanted to build a horseless carriage – one that could move on its own. The world had never seen anything like it. Most people thought he was crazy.

In 1885, he built it. The world’s first automobile. A three-wheeled machine powered by an internal combustion engine. It was noisy. It was slow. But it worked. It was called the Benz Patent-Motorwagen.

At first, people didn’t understand its potential. They were used to horses and carriages. They didn’t trust a machine on wheels. But Karl believed in his invention.

The turning point came thanks to his wife, Bertha. She saw what others didn’t. One morning in 1888, without telling Karl, she took the car and drove it over 60 miles from Mannheim to Pforzheim. It was the first long-distance automobile journey in history. Along the way, she solved mechanical issues herself, refueled at a pharmacy (since there were no gas stations yet), and proved the car was reliable. Her journey made headlines. People finally saw that the automobile was the future.

With Bertha’s help, Karl’s invention gained attention. Soon, the world wanted automobiles. His company, Benz & Cie., grew quickly. Meanwhile, another company, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), was making its own cars. In 1926, the two companies merged. The result? Mercedes-Benz—one of the most famous car brands in history.

Karl lived to see his dream become reality. By the time he passed away in 1929, cars were everywhere. His idea had changed the world forever.

But Karl and Bertha’s story doesn’t end there. Today, Mercedes-Benz honors their legacy. The company still leads in innovation, producing some of the world’s most advanced vehicles. And every year, the Bertha Benz Memorial Route retraces her legendary journey, reminding the world how one woman’s courage helped drive an industry forward.

Karl Benz didn’t just build a car. He built the future.
