On August 27, 1883, the island volcano Krakatoa erupted in a series of massive explosions, which could be heard up to 3,000 miles away. The eruptions triggered tsunamis in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, resulting in the tragic loss of around 36,000 lives in Java and Sumatra.

In 1894, the U.S. Congress passed the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act, which included a provision for a graduated income tax. This tax was later invalidated by the Supreme Court.

In 1964, the classic film “Mary Poppins” made its world premiere in Los Angeles, California.

– In 1982, Rickey Henderson of the Oakland A’s stole his 119th base of the season, surpassing Lou Brock’s single-season stolen base record. Henderson would go on to set a still-unbroken record of 130 stolen bases by the end of the season.

In 1990, blues musician Stevie Ray Vaughan and four others tragically died in a helicopter crash near East Troy, Wisconsin.

In 2001, Israeli helicopters fired rockets through office windows, killing senior PLO leader Mustafa Zibri.

In 2005, as Hurricane Katrina approached New Orleans, coastal residents flooded highways and gas stations in a desperate attempt to evacuate the area.
